What is marketing?

What is marketing? – The American Marketing Association defines marketing as follows:

“Marketing is the activity, set of institutions, and processes for creating, communicating, delivering and exchanging offerings that have value for customers, clients, partners, and society at large.”

Marketing is also referred to as being activities businesses undertake to promote the buying or selling of a product or service. The famous 4 Ps – Product, Price, Promotion and Price – are often used as the key planks of company marketing strategies.

Whilst marketing works to persuade someone to act, we need to go deeper to extract its real meaning and value.

Sure, marketing includes writing copy or posting content on your website, taking a selfie or shooting a video for your social media. But there is more to marketing.

Marketing goes way beyond advertising, Google Ads, email pitches or the way you do pricing.

Showing you understand and care about your customers is vital.

At dtb! we are UnitingCare Queensland’s creative marketing agency for 37 of their retirement living communities across Queensland, from the Gold Coast, Brisbane, Sunshine Coast, Hervey Bay, Bundaberg, Rockhampton, Mackay and Townsville.

Recently we partnered with Channel 7’s Weekender and trusted news presenter Kay McGrath to showcase some of the destinations of these retirement communities. We focused on resident stories, the lifestyle they enjoyed and the activities they loved, to appeal to like minded people thinking of making the move to retirement living.

“It’s not what you sell that matters as much as how you sell it!”

– Brian Halligan, CEO and Co-Founder, HubSpot

Your customers don’t want what you make or provide, they want what it does for them.

“Amazing things will happen when you listen to the consumer”

– Jonathan Midenhall, CMO, Airbnb

Show your passion for what you do, tell your story, promote what makes you different.

“People don’t buy what you do, they buy why you do it.”

– Simon Sinek, author and marketing consultant

Whatever promises you make, follow through on them consistently.

Whilst marketing is a contest to get people’s attention, the real prize is to win their hearts.
